Position: Civil/Structural Engineer

Reporting to: Lead Civil Engineer

Location: Plymouth (2-3 days per month onsite)

Date: ASAP

Duration: 6 months

Primary Purpose

The Civil/Structural Engineer will assist the Discipline Lead in delivering structural engineering work packages, ensuring they meet the required scope, quality, schedule, and cost. The role involves managing the technical deliverables of structural engineering packages and requires knowledge of seismic engineering principles or a background in designing nuclear-safety classified structures.

Key Accountabilities

  • Technical Deliverables: Ensure the delivery of technical outputs to the appropriate quality standards.
  • Project Management: Deliver technical outputs in line with project schedules and costs.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Design Preparation: Prepare and check civil/seismic designs, analyses, reports, drawings, specifications, and other documents supporting nuclear and non-nuclear related plant, facility, and equipment.
  • Problem Solving: Develop technical solutions to deficiencies or create new designs.
  • Review and Sentencing: Support the review of new designs, construction methodologies, and temporary works.
  • Design Management: Manage design work packages, including planning activities, estimating costs, and supporting construction.
  • Guidance and Supervision: Supervise and provide on-the-job guidance to junior staff.
  • Learn from Experience: Utilize information to develop and share knowledge, maintaining records of skills achieved.
  • Compliance: Ensure development, construction, installation, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of facilities comply with design intent and relevant regulations.
  • Site Inspection: Support on-site inspection for construction, maintenance, and modification of DRDL assets.
  • Familiarity: Maintain familiarity with DRDL procedures used within Facilities Engineering.

Interfacing Responsibilities

  • Collaboration: Work with other engineers, operations & integration leads, safety case engineers, project/package managers, user acceptance groups, design authority, engineering services technical authority, plant managers, and external suppliers to ensure effective coordination and compliance with design intent.

Authority

  • Support Requests: Request necessary support within budget constraints.
  • Documentation: Prepare and check design documentation.
  • Engineering Management Plan: Develop and implement plans, ensure compliance, and conduct audits.
  • Resource Management: Plan, estimate, and manage resources for assigned projects.
  • Sanction Actions: Implement actions that support the Engineering Management Plan.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Education: Degree in an appropriate engineering discipline.
  • Professional Registration: Chartered Engineer or working towards chartership.
  • Nuclear Knowledge: Understanding of seismic engineering and design substantiation for heavy civil engineering and building structures.
  • Construction Techniques: Knowledge of building services design, construction techniques, and relevant regulations.
  • Engineering Practice: Sound understanding of engineering design and safety practices.
  • Project Management: Experience in project specification, planning, management, and budgeting.
  • Software Proficiency: Working knowledge of relevant engineering office computer applications and Finite Element Analysis software.
